How to read key levels

"Levels" are reference prices many traders watch. They are not predictions and they are not signals to buy or sell. They are simply places where the market has done something notable before, so a lot of people pay attention to them.

Prior-day high, low, and close

Yesterday's highest price, lowest price, and final price. The high and low show the range buyers and sellers agreed on; the close is the price many funds use for valuation. Traders often note whether today is trading inside or outside yesterday's range.

Opening range

The high and low set in the first part of the session (commonly the first 5, 15, or 30 minutes). Some traders treat a move beyond that range as information about the day's tone, while others wait to see if the move holds.

Pivot points (the concept)

A pivot is an average of the prior session's high, low, and close. From it, simple formulas project "support" levels below and "resistance" levels above. They are mechanical and the same for everyone, which is partly why people watch them.

Round numbers

Whole and half numbers attract orders because people naturally pick them for entries, exits, and options strikes. Price sometimes pauses or speeds up near them.

How traders use them

Mostly for context and planning: deciding where an idea would be "wrong," sizing risk, or noticing when price reacts (or doesn't) at a widely watched area. Levels break all the time. Treat them as a map, not a forecast.
